Palakkadu Fort
Palakkadu fort is very famous and it has influenced the history of Kerala more than anything. The fort stands in the Palakkadu city itself.
This historical fort was built by the Mysore ruler Hyder Ali. The fort was built in 1776. For the military progression of Hyder to the Southern Kerala from Malabar, he needed a fort in the soils of Kerala. The fort was built with the aim to make Cochin-Malabar region the most important army centre. The fort is standing in 8.5 acres of land. There is a trench around the fort and still there is water in that trench. There is a bridge over this trench to the Fort gate. The Palakkadu fort was built under the leadership of French engineers. The fort was built using the mixture of lime and molasses. Later the fort came under Tippu Sultan who was the son and successor of Hyder Ali. Even though the fort was captured by the British in 1783, the fort is still known as Tippu’s fort.
