Hi Friends... UGC Announced Notification Regarding Procedure & Criteria For Declaration Of Result Of UGC NET To Be Held On 30th December, 2012 This will comprise of following steps: Step I: Minimum marks to be obtained in NET for considering a candidate for the award of JRF and eligibility for lectureship: The candidates are required to obtain following minimum marks separately in Paper-I, Paper-II and Paper-III as Notified in Initial Notification. Step II: Amongst those candidates who have cleared step I, a merit list will be prepared subject-wise and category-wise using the aggregate marks of all the three papers secured by such candidates. Step III: Top 15% candidates (for each subject and category), from the merit list mentioned under step II, will be declared NET qualified for eligibility for lectureship only. Step IV: A separate merit list for the award of JRF will be prepared from amongst the NET qualified candidates figuring in the merit list prepared under step III. UGC Seminar on ‘Human Rights for Women’

Korambayil Ahamed haji memorial Unity Women’s College, Manjeri, is organizing a UGC Sponsored national seminar on ‘Human Rights for Women’ during the second week of February, 2013. We would like to invite papers from individuals who are interested in participating in the seminar.

Though human rights are universal it has been difficult for women to access these rights on many fronts. Despite the advances women have made in the last couple of decades, human rights and freedom still is a cause of valid concern. Though protection from violence is a human right there are millions of women who face violence of either the physical or mental kind. Though all communities speak of the human right of women regarding marriage like whom, when and if to marry, this is often conveniently ignored.

A clan from Yemen and history of Malabar

There was one family in Malabar whose socio-religious standing the British authorities feared the most for its potential to inspire and mobilise the natives, especially Muslims, against the colonial rulers. It was the descendants of this family, including the most influential member of it, Syed Fazl Thangal, that the authorities furtively extradited to Arabia in March 1852 and ensured that they never returned to the coast of Malabar.      

Who was this Syed Fazl Thangal? How and why he and his family including his famous father, Syed Alawi Thangal, a member of the Ba Alawi clan from Hadhramaut in Yemen, who arrived in Malabar in February 1768 and settled at Mamburam in Malappuram district, to be later known as the Mamburam Thangal, was an important figure in the history of Malabar and its anti-colonial engagements?

The book

A book ‘Mappila Leader in Exile—a political biography of Syed Fazl Thangal’ authored by K.K. Muhammad Abdul Sathar, history professor and head of the History Department, PSMO College Tirurangadi in Malappuram, attempts to give an answer to theses questions while also throwing some light on the socio-political environment of the region during the colonial times.

Historiography of 1857 Revolt

THE Revolt of 1857 was born out of various features ranging from the British policy of conquest and expansion to the colonial exploitation of India. Geographically speaking, it affected north-western, north and central India. The ‘Sepoy Mutiny’– as it was labelled initially by the colonial official writings, focused on the ‘Mutiny’ theme.

To colonial officials and writers it was the handiwork of a set of discontented sipahis who were unhappy with the introduction, in 1857, of the new Enfield rifle, with its distinct ammunition, which required the bullet to be bitten before loading. Rumours that the grease used on the bullets was either from the fat of cattle or pigs had symbolic implications. Thus, whereas cows were considered ‘sacred’ by the Hindus, the Muslims considered pigs to be ‘polluting’.

Word from UGC in Notification: In view of several representations received from the candidates regarding certain issues related with the result of UGC-NET held on 24th June 2012, UGC had set up a Committee to look into the grievances of the candidates and revisit the result.

The Committee held a few meetings and took cognizance of nature of issues raised by the candidates. The Committee revisited the result and decided to qualify a few additional candidates for Junior Research Fellowship and eligibility for lectureship both and eligibility for lectureship only.

The candidates who were declared qualified as per the result declared earlier on 18th September 2012 will remain qualified. However, some of the candidates who were declared eligible for lectureship only in the result declared earlier on 18th September 2012, have been identified for the award of JRF.

In November 1236, Henry III (1216-1272) adjourned a law case to a 'parliament' which was due to meet in January the following year - the very first occasion the term 'parliament' was recorded in an official document of the English crown.

This did not, however, mark the birth of parliament. The use of the term in 1236 was new, but it described a type of assembly which had existed for many centuries.

The word 'parliament', derived from the French parliament, or Latin parliamentum, meant, in essence, 'discussion'. English kings had always discussed the affairs of the realm with their subjects, but under the Norman and Angevin kings these meetings had been described by contemporaries as 'councils'.
